House Rules Week 2
Not all storms come to disrupt your life; some come to clear your path.
House Rule #1:
Submit to God
James 4:7 NKJV
7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
Too many have been taught to question authority.
Instead, we should’ve been taught to ask who is in authority.
Proverbs 3:6 NKJV
6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.
House Rule #2
Let the words of your mouth be a fountain of blessings.
Ephesians 4:32 NKJV
32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.
Don’t yell at your kids before they go to bed and expect them to sleep well.
Don’t yell at your kids in the morning right after they wake up before school and expect them to have a good day.
You set the tone for your children. You set the tone for your voice, which they will always hear in their heads. You become their inner voice. Don’t be their inner critic. Let’s raise kids who don’t need therapy to heal from their childhoods.
Speak life. Speak love. Speak bravery and kindness and hope. Speak wisdom and truth. But, most of all, listen to your children. Be their safety net. Be their home.
Colossians 3:18-21 NKJV
18 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them. 20 Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord. 21 Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.
Husbands are commanded to obey three rules in this scripture:
1. Love your wives.
2. Don’t be bitter toward them.
3. Don’t provoke your children.
Children, you only have one rule: Obey
Wives, you only have one rule: Submit
Ephesians 6:1-4 NKJV
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise: 3 “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.” 4 And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.
Here, children have two rules:
1. obey
2. honor
Fathers, you have 2 rules here:
1. do not provoke your children.
2. train them up in the admonition of the Lord
Paul may be emphasizing two problems: wives not submitting and men provoking
Proverbs 30:17 NKJV
17 The eye that mocks his father, And scorns obedience to his mother, The ravens of the valley will pick it out, And the young eagles will eat it.
Psalms 133:1 NKJV
1 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brethren to dwell together in unity!
Verse 3: For there the Lord commands a blessing. Life forever more. God commands a blessing in unity.
If unity brings a blessing, disunity brings a curse.
House Rule #3
Die to self
James 3:16 NKJV
16 For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.
House Rule #4
Parents, make the kids feel secure.
House Rule #5
Your most serious task is to see them know and follow Christ.
