ENCOUNTERING JESUS Week 2
Luke 10:38-42 CET 38 The Lord and his disciples were traveling along and came to a village. When they got there, a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. 39 She had a sister named Mary, who sat down in front of the Lord and was listening to what he said. 40 Martha was worried about all that had to be done. Finally, she went to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it bother you that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her to come and help me!” 41 The Lord answered, “Martha, Martha! You are worried and upset about so many things, 42 but only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen what is best, and it will not be taken away from her.”
I. INVITATIONS CAN LEAD TO INTIMACY
Luke 10:38-39 CET 38 The Lord and his disciples were traveling along and came to a village. When they got there, a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. 39 She had a sister named Mary, who sat down in front of the Lord and was listening to what he said.
But invitations DON’T ALWAYS LEAD TO INTIMACY.
Better than “Did you invite Christ into your life?” is the question, “How often do you invite Christ into your life?”
II. DISTRACTIONS CAN BE DETRIMENTAL
Luke 10:40 CET “Martha was worried about all that had to be done….”
Luke 10:40 NIV “But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made.”
Luke 10:41 CET “The Lord answered, “Martha, Martha! You are worried and upset about so many things,”
“The great danger is not that we will renounce our faith. It is that we will become so distracted and rushed and preoccupied that we will settle for a mediocre version of it.” – John Ortberg
III. PRIORITY IS THE KEY TO YOUR PURPOSE.
Luke 10:42 CET But only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen what is best, and it will not be taken away from her.”
This was not an issue of good vs bad. It was a lesson on PRIORITY. A lesson on RANK. An emphasis on ORDER!
John 12:1-3,7 1 Six days before the Passover celebration began, Jesus arrived in Bethany, the home of Lazarus—the man he had raised from the dead. 2 A dinner was prepared in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, and Lazarus was among those who ate with him. 3 Then Mary took a twelve-ounce jar of expensive perfume made from essence of nard, and she anointed Jesus’ feet with it, wiping his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance. 7 Jesus replied, “Leave her alone. She did this in preparation for my burial.
